Venda

The problem

At the end of the 1990s a retailer that wanted to sell online had to buy, install and maintain its own e-commerce software, usually at a cost only the largest could bear. Venda's proposition was that a retailer should be able to run an online shop without owning any of the software, paying instead for a hosted service shared with other retailers and priced on results. Today that model is called software as a service. In 1998 it was simply an unusual way to sell e-commerce.

The approach

Venda began in 1998 as a subsidiary within The Dialog Corporation, alongside the group's web-solutions business. After the Dialog sale, Bright Station plc bought the technology assets of boo.com, the fashion retailer whose collapse had come to symbolise the dot-com crash, for £250,000. In 2001 James Cronin, boo.com's former chief technology officer, joined Venda and rebuilt that technology as a true multi-tenant platform: a single codebase serving every client's shop from a data centre near Reading.

Retailers paid a share of sales rather than a licence fee, which aligned the two sides in a way the enterprise-software model of the day did not. Over the following decade Venda's clients included Tesco's F&F clothing brand, TK Maxx, Laura Ashley, Virgin Megastores and boohoo.com. The company raised $20 million from Investor Growth Capital and GF Private Equity in December 2006, appeared in the Sunday Times Tech Track 100 in 2006 and 2007, and grew to around 240 staff in London, New York and Bangkok.

Roles

Dan founded Venda and ran it as chief executive until 2010, when he stepped back to concentrate on Powa and remained chairman until the company was sold. Venda is the clearest case of continuity between the listed Bright Station plc of 2000 and the private Bright Station that followed: it was one of the businesses the listed group kept after the Dialog sale, and it was carried forward when that group was wound up.

Outcome

Venda was acquired by NetSuite, the American cloud-software company, in a transaction that completed on 17 July 2014. Oracle acquired NetSuite in November 2016, so the platform built from boo.com's remains sits today inside one of the world's largest software companies. The idea sketched inside Dialog in 1998 had taken sixteen years to reach that point.

Today

Venda no longer operates under its own name; its platform and team became part of NetSuite's commerce offering, now Oracle NetSuite. Bright Station has no continuing interest in the business. Status checked 24 September 2026.
